September 6 - 35th Annual Norma Owen Memorial Golf Tournament

The Guelph Police Association is extremely proud and excited to announce the 35th Annual Norma Owen Memorial Golf Tournament, which will be held on Wednesday, September 6th, 2017, at the Ariss Valley Golf and Country Club. This tournament is in memory of Constable Norma Owen, who was a member of the Guelph Police Service and succumbed to cancer in 1983. They have had this golf tournament since 1983, and the proceeds from these events have been donated to various cancer related charities in our community.

This year organizers are proud to be giving the 2017 proceeds back to Hospice Wellington, in an effort to assist them in continuing to provide a tranquil place for the terminally ill. The comfort of being surrounded by family and friends in a peaceful, caring environment makes such a huge difference. Hospice Wellington has been caring for the people of Guelph and Wellington County since 1980. Kindness and compassion is the cornerstone of what Hospice Wellington gives to our community every day.

Ongoing Impactful Fundraising

Community Authors Making A Difference

Hospice Wellington was recently given a wonderful donation of $1,359 to put towards their essential services and programming.  The funds were raised via proceeds from book sales from authors Lisa Browning and Margaret Brix.

You Are Not Alone” is an impactful collection of 52 stories of hope compiled by Lisa Browning.  The stories are from writers who have shared their own personal experiences as a gift to help those dealing a life-limiting illness or that are experiencing grief.  These personal stories are impactful moments that can help ease, educate and comfort its readers.

Grampa’s Butterfly” is a beautiful children’s book written by Margaret Brix.  Based upon the loss of her own father, this story of the butterfly was a gift to her own children to help them cope with their sense of loss and grief.  It is a true tale of love and kindness that inspires people to become the most beautiful butterfly possible.

Hospice Wellington offers exceptional care to people living with a life-limiting illness, and support to individuals and families that are experiencing grief due to the loss of a loved one. Hospice Wellington is extremely grateful towards our community for their efforts in fundraising and events.  They help us to raise much-needed funds for our 10-bed residence and all of our supportive programming and services for those needing our services here in Guelph and Wellington County. Our care is warm, skilled and compassionate, and is available both in our residence and in the community.

Both books are still being sold with proceeds benefitting Hospice Wellington.  “You Are Not Alone” can be purchased at Hospice Wellington, 795 Scottsdale Drive in Guelph and both books can also be purchased at One Thousand Trees Bookstore - http://www.ottbookstore.com/

1st Annual Franco Figliuzzi Memorial Golf Tournament is a strong success

Back on May 29, 2017, a wonderful new event took place in memory of a man who thrived on community giving and helping those in our region that were less fortunate.   The 1st Annual Franco Figliuzzi Memorial Golf Tournament was held at Cutten Fields and was organized by family members and committee members.

Franco Figliuzzi immigrated to Canada when he was 16 years of age. He started barbering at the young age of 13 and opened up his own barber shop in March of 1967. Franco’s Barbershop is still in operation at the same location on Wellington Street, in the heart of the Royal City of Guelph Ontario.

On June 30th, 2015 at the young age of 74, Franco suffered a massive stroke which took his life. His memory and legacy that he left in both his family and the community has been overwhelming.  Franco was known as a family man and one who embraced his local community.  At times, he would even donate his time and barber services to those that were palliative.

The Franco Memorial Golf Tournament is dedicated to embracing our community.  Hospice Wellington, along with Guelph Big Brothers/Big Sisters, were lucky enough to benefit from these efforts.

Based on the success from the tournament, $6,000 has been donated to Hospice Wellington.  The funds raised from this year’s tournament will help support annual expenses in the area of compassionate/basic needs of Hospice Wellington residence clients

Hospice Wellington determined there was a need for a fund that focuses on uplifting support to those using the Hospice Wellington residence and for families to celebrate special occasions together while a family member is needing the use of Hospice Wellington.  On the occasion that a client has a need while in our care and is unable to afford it and/or it would make their stay more comfortable, Hospice Wellington makes every effort to provide for this need.  Some examples are personal grooming, haircuts, celebration supplies (birthday cake, baby shower decorations, wedding cake), dental work, and clothing needs.

Hospice Wellington’s annual fundraising walk, “Walk in the Park” presented by Scotiabank took place on Friday, June 9th at beautiful Royal City Park in Guelph.

The event began with a free barbecue for participants prepared by Borealis Grille & Bar with the Walk in the Park scheduled to begin at 7pm. This evening event was a strong community family-friendly event that helped generate awareness for Hospice Wellington along with over $29,700 in net profits which will go towards programming and services for those living with a life-limiting illness, and to support individuals and families that are experiencing grief due to the loss of a loved one.

There were plenty of activities for families and friends to enjoy including children’s activities from the City of Guelph, the Guelph Firefighters, our Community Weave and creations from our Youth Legacy Project along with our Therapy Tent.

Special shout out to our Top Fundraiser Meghan Weiler and the members of Team Meghan who raised the most money as a team!  Over $6,300 was raised by this team alone!  They won some of the fundraising prizes including the train tickets from VIA Rail and the Pizza Party/Brewery Tour from Domino’s and Wellington’s Brewery.

Thank you to all our volunteers and the Walk in the Park event committee for working so hard to make this year’s event a success.

Special THANK YOU to Jennifer Lamb for being our event photographer – some wonderful photos from this year’s event.  Also, thank you to Marion Oakley for getting some more photos of our wonderful volunteers in action on this day!  To view these photos – please click here
