How to Volunteer

Hospice Wellington is committed to providing a rewarding experience for our volunteers and an exceptional level of service for our clients. Volunteers are screened at the highest level and provided with outstanding training to prepare them for their roles.

Volunteer Application Steps

  • Review our website and familiarize yourself with Hospice Wellington.
  • Attend interview with Volunteer Coordinator.
  • Complete the 33-hour Volunteer Training Course.
  • Provide:
    • Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC), completed within the past 12 months.
    • 3 references.
    • Copies of 2-step TB test and immunization record.
  • Complete post-training review with Volunteer Coordinator.

Please note:

It is recommended that candidates wait for one year after a significant death to apply for volunteer training.

The associated costs of completing the required documentation are covered by the volunteer.

Volunteers are requested to commit to at least one year of volunteering with Hospice Wellington.

Volunteer Training

Volunteers who successfully complete the 33-hour training course will receive a Certificate of Completion and will have covered a range of topics including:

  • Introduction to Hospice Palliative Care.
  • Emotional and Psychological Aspects of Death and Dying.
  • Grief and Bereavement.
  • Ethics and Boundaries.
  • Diversity, Spirituality, Inclusivity.
  • Understanding illness trajectory and pain and symptom management.
